Sealants
The prevention of tooth decay is key to a healthy mouth, and one of the most vital components of your routine visit to DeWan Dental Wellness. Brushing and flossing help remove food particles and plaque from smooth surfaces of teeth, but pits and fissures in your teeth are extremely difficult to clean, making them especially prone to decay. Most cavities form in pit and fissure areas, and permanent molars are susceptible to this form of decay as well. This is where sealants come in! They protect these vulnerable areas, by "sealing out" plaque and food, and sealants are extremely effective in helping prevent tooth decay. The best part is that sealants only take a few minutes and can normally be done at the end of a routine visit.
For Children and Adults
The likelihood of developing pit and fissure decay begins early in life, so children and teenagers are great candidates for sealants. But adults can benefit from sealants as well.
Your tooth decay risk varies over time, due to changes in personal habits, health status and medication use. For example, lack of access to fluorides and fluoridated water, or a history of previous tooth decay are common factors we would consider when evaluating whether you may benefit from sealants.
