Tooth-colored restorations
Bright is right
Tooth-colored or composite resin restorations are good for your smile and for your health. Placing tooth-colored restorations is highly technique sensitive and requires our full focus so we have chosen to offer only composite fillings, not silver. In fact, in many countries, silver fillings (which contain mercury) are simply not done because of mercury's effect on the environment.
Many people are opting to replace their silver fillings with composite restorations. We believe that composite restorations are better for your dental health because they:
- Retain tooth structure better than silver fillings so that fracture of cusps is less likely when carefully placed.
- Maintain the internal health of the tooth. Composite restorations help protect the blood supply and nerve chambers inside the tooth because they are bonded into place.
- Maintain biocompatibility with your mouth's living cells, unlike mercury fillings.
With composite restorations, we see much less fracturing of teeth and, consequently, less need for more extensive treatment such as crowns and root canals.
Preparation for a composite restoration is similar to preparation for a silver filling but it is a much more conservative treatment because less tooth structure is removed. First the decay is removed then the composite material is placed and bonded into place. The composite is cured with a strong light and the restoration is adjusted to your bite then smoothed and polished.
The result is a brighter smile and healthier teeth!
